Department of Irrigation and Drainage

Department of Irrigation and Drainage

The reliable water supplies for irrigated agriculture are instrumental to feed the growing population in developing countries including Pakistan. However, water supplies are declining with each passing day, therefore their efficient utilization and management is crucial for sustainable agriculture.

The water resources, irrigation and drainage engineers are educated and trained to recognize complex problems related to the planning, designing and utilization of available water resources.

The Department of Irrigation and Drainage was established in 1977 under the Faculty of Agricultural Engineering to produce young engineers and scientists in the field of irrigation, drainage and water resources engineering.

The department offers postgraduate degree programs of M.E and Ph.D in Irrigation and Drainage and contributes significantly to teaching and research activities at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

Mission of the Department

The mission of the Department is to provide quality education and research for irrigated agriculture by developing sustainable water resources management practices.

The department aims to provide permanent solutions against the threats of waterlogging and salinity through innovative research in field drainage.

It focuses on imparting knowledge of basic and advanced principles in irrigation and drainage, including planning, designing, water conservation, water management, removal of surplus water and safe disposal or reuse.

Through classrooms, laboratories, library and field farms, the department prepares engineering graduates to contribute toward sustainable agricultural production.
