Department of Soil Science

Department of Soil Science

The Department of Soil Science has a long academic and research history. It was originally established as the Department of Agricultural Chemistry with the Agricultural Research Station at Sakrand in 1926.

Later, the research station was upgraded to the King George V Institute of Agriculture in 1939. In 1954, it became the College of Agriculture at Tandojam and shifted to the building currently known as the Faculty of Crop Production.

For better focus and orientation toward emerging disciplines, the Department of Agricultural Chemistry was renamed as the Department of Soil Science on March 1, 1977.

The department offers B.Sc., M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in Soil Science. Its curriculum is revised and updated every five years through a national consultative process under the Higher Education Commission of Pakistan.

Message from Chairman

Chairman Department of Soil Science
Prof. Dr. Allah Wadhayo Gandahi

Chairman, Department of Soil Science

We extend to the visitors of this site a warm welcome and greetings from the faculty and staff of the Department of Soil Science.

The department has highly qualified faculty with Ph.D. degrees from different countries including Canada, Germany, Malaysia, New Zealand, China and the United Kingdom. It maintains a professional interface with national and international institutes.

The department has well-equipped laboratories including Soil Fertility, Biosaline Agriculture and Plant Nutrition laboratories for student research and faculty research and development activities. It also has two large glass houses for pot experimentation and access to university farms for field experiments.

The Department of Soil Science focuses on climate-resilient soil management, sustainable agricultural practices, soil health, crop productivity, soil fertility, salinity, sodicity, soil and water pollution, heavy metal toxicity and climate-change related issues.

The department also maintains strong links with national and international organizations, fertilizer industries, research bodies and development partners for joint research activities and wider engagement with the farming community.
